For well over one hundred years, museum collections from Chaco Culture National Historical Park and Aztec Ruins National Monument have drawn the interest of individuals curious about those that came before and what they left behind. While many researchers and educators focus on items excavated from the height of Chacoan Ancestral Pueblo communities, the National Park Service Museum and Archives Staff care for more than 3.1 million items ranging from excavated objects, archival documents, oral history recordings, historic photographs, and historic objects to plant specimens, shark teeth, and architectural samples!
May 18th is International Museum Day celebrating “Museums for Education and Research.” Chaco and Aztec partner with other institutions to physically care for specialized collections as well as making items available for research and education of diverse audiences. This presentation will introduce the Chaco and Aztec Museum and Archives staff, explore lesser-known items in the collections, and share how the Chaco Culture Conservancy is helping to expand discoverability and access of the collections for research and education.
