The park staff continues to make progress on the Conservancy-sponsored projects for 2022. Here are some of their accomplishments so far.
A contractor has been chosen to complete the entry of 42 finding aids to the New Mexico Archives Online (NMAO) platform (https://nmarchives.unm.edu/). The contractor will begin work by August 1. This will increase access and discoverability of Chaco archival resources to scholars and the general public.
The Natural Resource shed is being prepped for the application of winterizing foam. Once that is complete, the shelving and supplies will be purchased and installed
Cultural Resources staff has chosen Woods Canyon Archaeological Consultants to complete the project of 3D scanning a portion of Pueblo Bonito. The staff has trained them on the use of the scanner. On-site work will begin in August.
A special Summer Solstice event was held at Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Jon Ghahate, an educator from the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, and Barnet Garcia, from Acoma Pueblo, assisted the staff during this event. Mr. Ghahate presented public tours of Pueblo Bonito which emphasized indigenous perspectives, while Mr. Barnet played his drum while singing traditional songs.
Accomplished Dine weaver and educator Vernacio Aragon gave a presentation at Aztec Ruins entitled “Contemporary. Issues Impacting the Navajo Weaving Economy”. Additional speakers will be coming soon.
